Slimming World's marathon team run miles for SMILES

Slimming World’s marathon team have lost lbs and are now hoping to raise £s for charity as they compete in the biggest running event of the year.

Six runners, who have all lost weight with Slimming World, will represent the UK’s leading slimming club in the London Marathon, raising money for the company’s charity SMILES (Slimmers Making It a Little Easier for Someone).

The Slimming World team is made up of members Lindsey Bellis, Tracey Paveley, and Iain Bullock, Consultant Jo Gregory who runs Slimming World groups in Derbyshire, and Kathryn Briggs and Paul Siddall, who work at Slimming World head office.

The group, who have lost a total of almost 23 stones between them, aim to raise £5,000 for the NSPCC, SMILES’ charity partner for 2009. The money they collect in sponsorship, as well as all the cash raised by SMILES throughout the year, will go towards the NSPCC’s Child’s Voice Appeal, helping the charity to improve Childline and the NSPCC Helpline.

Marathon update!

The amazing team have raised a fantastic £6,384 this year. The money will go to our SMILES charity, supporting the tremendously worthwhile NSPCC.

Kathryn Briggs, who lost six stone 13 years ago and has taken part most years, says she hopes the team raises a large amount of money this year to mark Slimming World’s 40th anniversary.

Paul Siddall, who has lost around five stones, says: “Slimming World has more than 300,000 members nationwide so I feel very honoured to have been one of the six people picked to represent the company. The support that Slimming World has given me during my weight loss journey has been amazing and it’s a great place to work, so it’s brilliant to be able to give something back and raise money for SMILES, especially because the NSPCC is such a good cause.”

Jo Gregory, who has lost around four stones, says: “I always encourage my members to incorporate physical activity into their daily routine, whether it’s something small like washing the car or vacuuming or something more strenuous like running a marathon! I have already run the Edinburgh Marathon and some half-marathons. Every week I keep my group updated on my training and they have all been incredibly supportive.”

Lindsey, who aims to raise around £1,000, says “The training has really boosted my weight loss. I ran the London Marathon last year and completed it in 6 hours and 8 minutes. I was really pleased with my time but I hope that I will finish in an even faster time this year because I’m carrying less weight.”

Tracey Paveley who has lost 1st 7lbs, says: “After losing weight I found that I enjoyed exercise a lot more than I expected to. I’ve now done a few 10k runs and a 10 mile run but this will be my first marathon! The great thing about Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan is that it’s so flexible it fits into your life whatever you are doing – even if you’re training for a marathon! Following the plan gives me all the energy I need as I tuck into pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish and eggs every day.”

He has done so well since he joined the group and it is a great compliment to be chosen to represent Slimming World.
